Hi, it's "Tigger" from the Couples Message Board I originally created this all-inclusive document for Couples Negril. "Jeanie" expanded and revised it slightly for CSA (Couples Swept Away) after their stay in June 2004. Keep in mind that event availability and times may vary during your stay.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the differences between the various room categories?
Couples Swept Away has undergone an extended expansion project. In 2004, 72 new “Verandah” suites and 3 new room categories were added. Previously, the categories of suites were Garden Suites, Atrium Suites and Beachfront Suites. These are the rooms you will hear referred to as the “original section” of CSA. New buildings were added to house new suites, with 3 new categories of rooms: Garden Verandah Suites, Ocean Verandah Suites, and Beachfront Verandah Suites.
All rooms are air conditioned with ceiling fan, King Bed or 2 Double Beds (only Garden Suites category rooms have Double beds, all others have King), private shower, telephone, CD player/radio, blow dryer, safety deposit box, balcony/terrace.
Regular visitors to this resort often prefer the “original section” because of the ambience, as well as the proximity to dining, lobby, pools and watersports. Our personal preference is the atrium category of the “original section” mostly because we like the private hammock, no TV, and prefer the style of the original rooms. Many guests prefer 2nd floor accommodations, because of the exposed beams and the guests walking the paths near the verandahs. We did not find this a problem in our first-floor room, we could see the gardens and the beach, as well as the occasional passing couple or staff member. The foliage is denser in the old section (less so after Hurricane Ivan) and we enjoyed the convenience of using our back-door for walking in/out almost exclusively.
If you book in the new section, your verandah will be smaller than the original units, and all suites have a TV, bathtub, and minibar. Tropical foliage is newer, so less dense. The atmosphere in the newer section is more “hotel-like” but accommodations and furnishings are more updated. The new buildings are 3-story, 12 units per building. There is a new hot tub located in the center of the area with the new buildings – it’s great for late-night soaks or early-morning relaxation. It is our understanding that the next phase of the expansion project will include a pool with swim up bar.

What should we pack?
Let’s start with clothes! You should pack lightweight cotton clothes due to the heat and humidity. If you are planning to dine at Feathers, the gourmet restaurant which is formal and elegant, men need to wear a nice shirt with a collar, long pants and closed toe shoes (no sandals) while women would need dresses, nice blouse & skirt or a nice pants outfit, women's dress sandals are acceptable.
No swimwear, tank tops, etc. Men will need closed-toe shoes for dining in the main dining room in the evening. For breakfast and lunch you can wear shorts, top and shoes as well as swimwear with a cover-up. The beach grill is much more casual; swimsuits are common. Of course you can dress up as much as you like at any of the meals. All other times require normal summer and swimwear attire. If you plan to go horseback riding long pants are recommended. For golfing, typical golf club attire is required. Note: if you plan to go into town or tour the countryside it is not appropriate to wear only beach attire. Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen as the sun is very strong; plan to use it even if you already have a tan. Bring your normal toiletries, prescription drugs, various OTC medicines for headaches, upset stomach, etc. and aloe for sunburns or sun dried skin. In the evenings, it is advisable to wear insect repellant, especially on your legs and arms. All the dining is open-air at Swept Away, and mosquitoes can be bothersome after dark. Take a camera with plenty of film; if you have a digital camera have rechargeable batteries or plenty of extra batteries and be sure your memory card is of sufficient size. A waterproof camera is suggested if you plan to parasail, snorkel, scuba dive or go on the Catamaran cruise. You can buy many of these items at CSA but it is somewhat expensive. If you like to read on the beach, take paperback books or magazines. A small soft-sided suitcase that you can fold up and pack in your suitcase would come in handy for items that you will purchase to bring home.
NOTE: Pack a carry-on with a change of clothes for both, swim wear and cover-ups, your normal toiletries, prescriptions, various OTC medicines for headaches, upset stomach, etc. This way if the checked luggage gets lost or does not make a transfer you will at least have the things you need.
Return to FAQ List
What should we wear to the resort?
Wear lightweight, comfortable clothes and shoes. Even if you get cold on the airplane, plan on wearing shorts. You are going to the tropics and it is very warm and humid. A/C at the airport and in many of the buses/vans is not as efficient as back in the States.
Return to FAQ List
Should we bring beach towels and/or floats?
No, CSA provides lounge chairs, cushions/floats and beach towels. There will be two beach towels in your room upon arrival. The towels can be exchanged for clean, dry ones from 8 am to 4 pm at the water sports hut. At the end of your stay, turn your towels in and they will give you a receipt that you must show at checkout (or pay $15/towel!).
Return to FAQ List
Should we bring large insulated mugs? I heard that the glasses are small.
No. Couples’ Policy - Drinks are to be served in glasses or cups provided by Couples Resort. (Management on October 12, 2004 restated this policy.) The cups at the bars are standard size. If your room does not have a minibar, a pitcher of ice water will be kept filled by Housekeeping. Bottled water and sports drinks can be purchased in the gift shop.
Return to FAQ List
We heard that it rains a lot, should we bring an umbrella?
It can rain everyday in the afternoon normally between 2 and 4 pm. Normally at that time of the day you are on the beach, in the pool or at the swim-up pool bar and most of the time it is only for a few minutes. There are umbrellas provided in all the rooms – notify the front desk if one is not provided in your room closet.
Return to FAQ List
How much money should we bring?
It will depend upon how much shopping and off site excursions such as tours, Jet Ski rental, parasailing, etc. that you will do. Anything you buy at CSA you can charge to your room and pay with a credit card upon checkout. Most of the off site tours arranged through CSA you can charge to a credit card. Most of the stores in town and at the airport take credit cards. The shops at the craft park normally require cash.
NOTE: When shopping in town, some stores will charge a fee for you to use your credit card.
Return to FAQ List
Do we need to exchange US dollars for Jamaican dollars?
No, US money is acceptable currency in Jamaica. In fact, most items are priced in US dollars. Therefore, do not waste your time and money with currency exchange. In fact when you buy something, if you use Jamaican Dollars (J$) the store will “convert” the J$ to US$ at a premium, i.e. a service fee. Do have small bills ($1 & $5) ready for tipping.
Return to FAQ List
If we come from a country other than the US do we need to exchange our currency for J$?
You have to exchange it for either J$ or US$. We would recommend exchanging your currency into US$ since most items are priced in US$. This way you can avoid any unnecessary conversions. (see above question)
Return to FAQ List
Can we use traveler checks? Where do we exchange them?
Yes. You can exchange them at the airport, banks, and some stores as well as at CSA. They will be converted into J$, again at a fee. Depending upon where you exchange the traveler checks, the fee could be 10% to 20% above the official exchange rate. We recommend bringing 200 US$ or convert your currency into 200 US$ with some being small bills for various off site tipping. Then use your credit and/or debit card as much as possible. If you are not from the US, the purchase price will be 1% to 3% above the official international exchange rate by using a credit card. This is the best possible exchange rate that you can obtain. (see note under “How much money we should bring?”)
Return to FAQ List
Does CSA charge a deposit to your credit card?
When you check in, they will place a $250 hold on your charge or debit card to cover incidentals that you may charge to your room such as photos, film, suntan lotion, etc. If you do not charge anything, then nothing is actually put onto your card. If you do not have either a charge or debit card, then they will ask for $250 cash deposit. All hotels in the US do the same thing upon check in.
Return to FAQ List
Which credit cards does Couples
Swept Away accept?
Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover.

Do we need passports?
US citizens must have a passport. Other nationalities please contact local Jamaica Tourism Board office.

Return to FAQ List
What do we do after arriving at Mobay airport?
After deplaning, (some flights exit to a skyway, others directly to the tarmac) you will first go through Immigration with the Immigration cards that you filled out for EACH person on the airplane. After clearing Immigration you will then retrieve your luggage bypassing currency exchange (see currency question above). After retrieving all your luggage proceed to Customs with your Customs declaration card(s) that you filled out on the airplane); 99% of tourists are only bringing in personal items so in this case proceed to the “Nothing To Declare” lines. Please note that the customs cards are one card per family or
one card per person if you have different last names. To clarify, your customs card must be filled out with the name used on your identification (passport or birth certificate). This means if you’re married but using a birth certificate or passport with your maiden name, you must fill out a card using your maiden name. Personal note: Please for the benefit of everyone, fill out the Immigration and Customs cards on the airplane or before you get in line.
Return to FAQ List
What about tipping at the airport?
You don’t have to worry about this until after you clear Customs as you’ll be handling your own luggage until that point. Once you clear customs you may have several people asking to carry your luggage. I suggest not doing it as they may carry it literally 10 feet and set it down and ask for a tip. At this point someone else will ask to carry your luggage. If you have a lot of luggage you’ll already have it on a cart, so take your own luggage to the Couples desk. Once you’re ready to board the bus/van, a baggage handler will take the luggage of several people to the bus/van. Let them handle it, because it can be a long haul to the bus/van. This person you do tip; $1 per bag is acceptable.
When you arrive at CSA, it is up to you but we generally tip the driver a few dollars. Once you step off the bus/van no one gets tipped. In fact they can get fired for accepting tips. Anything off the resort, tip as you would in the States.
Return to FAQ List
How do we get transportation to CSA?
After clearing Customs you will enter the “arrival area”; ask for the Couples desk. They will "check” you in. You will get a numbered luggage tag for each bag; be sure the tag correctly identifies the resort you are visiting. You may have to wait 15 to 30 minutes until all the couples that arrived at the same time clear Customs. They have a lounge where you can get beer, water and soft drinks. They will then transport you to CSA by air-conditioned (but not as cool as your car!) bus/van. Prior to boarding, make sure all
your luggage gets loaded onto your bus/van.
Return to FAQ List
How long does the bus/van trip take to CSA?
Approximately 1.5 hours depending upon the time of day and day of the week.
Return to FAQ List
What if we arrive early and our room is not ready?
Official check-in is 4 pm. If your arrival is earlier than this, they will try to get you into a room if possible, but the best thing to do is to have your swimwear and cover-ups easily accessible. This way if you want you can change in the bathroom or if available, hospitality room and go to the beach and/or pool. Otherwise grab a bite to eat, have a rum punch, relax and have fun.
Couples Swept Away has changing area, showers and lockers available at the Sports Complex.
Return to FAQ List
What do we do with our luggage while we check in and/or wait for our room to be ready?
After arriving at CSA, she will proceed to check in. Have your travel documents and written confirmations ready to make this process easier. He is asked to remain and confirm that all of your luggage is unloaded from the bus/van. CSA will watch your luggage until you are checked in and your room is ready at which time they will take you and your luggage to your room.
Return to FAQ List
How will we find out about the activities that take place at the resort while we’re there?
Daily orientation takes place from the Main
Lobby at 10 am and 5 pm. If you are unable to fit this into your schedule
of rum and relaxation just consult the handout given to you at check in for general information about the resort and extension numbers. You will also be given a map and a Daily Activities brochure. This makes for good reading over coffee on your verandah in the morning! Click
HERE to pop up a sample daily activity
list.

When are meals served?
There are 4 restaurants at CSA, with food available 24 hours. Continental breakfast is available in the main dining room from 5 to 7 am. If you prefer, you can have Continental breakfast (only room service available) delivered to your room from 6:30 am to 10 am; there are tags on the back of your room door to order this – fill out and hang on your doorknob before 1 am. Full breakfast is from 7:30 am to 10:30 am; this includes omelets and fried eggs made to order, pancakes, waffles,
French toast, bacon, ham, sausage, potatoes, fresh fruits and much more. The main dining room serves a buffet lunch featuring hot and cold dishes, salads, fresh fruits and pastries from 12:30 am to 2:30 pm. Next to the main pool is CSA’s 3-in-1 restaurant known as the Veggie Bar, Sea Grapes Café, and the Late Night Grill. Smoothies, fresh fruits, and a light lunch of casual fare and snacks is served at the Veggie Bar from 10 am to 6 pm, including grilled jerk chicken and fish. Sea Grapes Cafe is open from 7 pm to 9:30 pm every night except Mondays and Fridays, serving Italian cuisine and pasta dishes. The Late Night Grille opens with a menu of hamburgers and sandwiches from 11 pm to 5 am. The main dining room is open from 7:30 pm to 10 pm serving
ala carte dinners. Lemongrass, the newest restaurant located above the main dining room overlooking the main pool and garden, serves Thai cuisine and is open from 7 to 9 pm every night except Mondays and Fridays. Feathers takes reservations with six seatings Tuesday through Sunday and serves fine continental cuisine. Reservations are required. Personal note: some people don’t want to bother dressing up, but we believe the food and the experience are worth it. Feathers is closed on Mondays for a private dinner for repeat guests. The Sports Bar across from Feathers serves hot hors d'oeuvres and appetizers every day from 3 to 10 pm , except Mondays, which makes it a pleasant place to greet
friends before dinner and watch TV or play games. The beach party is on
Friday night and is a “can’t-miss” event. All the Jamaican specialties are
served under the stars and the staff goes all out to make it a fun, festive
evening. Large tables are set up for dining, so mingling is encouraged on
this one night. After dinner and dessert, there is entertainment, limbo
dancer, fire eater, bicycle stunts, steel drum band, and musical chairs. There is also movie night, where you can snuggle with your loved one and watch a film together. In addition, there are cocktail parties for Honeymooners and Repeat Guests – an invitation will be placed in your room at the evening turndown. For dress attire at the various restaurants and meals see "What should we pack" question above.
Return to FAQ List
Should we fly from Mobay to CSA?
Personal opinion, no…to fly to CSA after clearing Customs you would wait to get shuttled over to another part of Mobay airport, wait to board a small airplane for the 15 to 20 minute flight to Negril, wait for a van to take you to CSA - You may save 15 to 20 minutes. This might be worthwhile to you if you don’t like the bus ride or simply CAN’T WAIT TO GET TO COUPLES!
Return to FAQ List
Does CSA have Internet access?
Yes. It is located on the upper level above the lobby. There is no charge. They request you limit your access to 15 minutes at a time if people are waiting. There were 3 machines available in July 2004. Also, WIFI is available free of charge (lobby area).
Return to FAQ List
What about storage of valuables?
Each room has a small safe. When you check in they will give you a lock and
one key. Do not lose the key, as it will cost you $100 to have the lock replaced. New section (Verandah) has keyless/programmable safes, and regular laptop can fit it.
Return to FAQ List
We know alcohol is included -- what kinds of drinks are available?
You can get beer, red and white house wine, various juices and almost any type of mixed drink. If you can tell them what is in the drink you can most likely get it. CSA has an excellent selection of top shelf spirits. You can get any of the mixed drinks with or without alcohol. The tap water is excellent and safe to drink. You can also get Blue Mountain coffee, said to be the best in the world and various teas. They also have wines available for purchase ranging from $20 per bottle up to $200 per bottle. Be sure to try some of their “specialty” drinks like the Dirty Banana, Hummingbird, etc.
Return to FAQ List
Can you get alcoholic drinks before 10:00 am?
At breakfast each resort has a self serve selection of sparkling wine, vodka, bloody mary mix and orange juice. Other than this you have to wait until 10:00 am unless you have a suite with a minibar.
Return to FAQ List
Do we need to sign up/make reservations for anything other than
some restaurants?
Yes. The sunset catamaran cruise departs
4 days per week around 3:30 pm (varies with time of year); signup at the water sports area from 9 am to 4 pm, one day in advance. Water sports activities include snorkeling, glass bottom boat, wind surfing, sunfish sailing and water skiing; again, you can find the schedule and sign up at the water sports area. For scuba diving, if you’re not certified you must take and pass a class the day before your dive (if you
are certified be sure to take your card with you!). If you haven’t dived in a while they may ask you to show your skills in the pool. Check the schedule and sign up at the scuba hut from 8 am to 4 pm. During the week, there are 2 daily dives at 8:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. On Saturday there is a two-tank dive. For a fee, night dives can be arranged. Please note that dive schedules will change based on season and conditions. On most dives, there is a staff videographer along who will make a video which will be available for your purchase immediately following the dive. Other activities include golf with shuttle departures at 8 am and 1 pm (green fees included, club and cart rental extra, mandatory caddy fee) and private sports lessons like tennis. For a complete list of activities, attend orientation, which is offered daily at 10 am and 5 pm . They will explain what they have to offer, what needs to be signed up for and show you where everything is. Staff events, classes and event times will be provided. You can pick up an activity sheet in the lobby, look at the book in your room or tune into the Couples channel on TV. The activity schedule repeats every week. See "Activities at CSA" below.
NOTE: You should check and sign up for dinner and any activities as soon as possible because many have limited dates of operation and are limited to the number of people.
Return to FAQ List
Can you sign up or make reservations for dinner and activities prior to arrival at CSA?
No you can not. If you make them the day that you arrive or the following morning, you should not have any problems.
Feathers, Lemongrass and Patois Patio require reservations in the evening.
Return to FAQ List
What if I want a drink or go to the bathroom while I’m on the beach?
There are 2 bars within a short walking distance of the beach, and it’s a short stroll to the bar at the main dining room. In addition, flag service is available early in the day. Yellow flags are provided and you stick them in the sand to indicate you would like to place a drink order. The layout of the CSA property makes it a short walk to everything, and the winding walkways and paths are beautiful too.
Return to FAQ List
Can women go topless in or around the pool? Does Swept Away offer nude sunbathing?
No. Couples’ Policy - Women are not allowed to go topless in or around the main pools at any of the three resorts. (Management on October 6, 2004 restated this policy) While you may encounter some topless sunbathing on the beach at Swept Away, it is not common. There is no area for nude sunbathing at this resort.
Return to FAQ List
When is check-out and when do we leave the resort?
Check out is noon. You will leave the resort 3.5 hours to 4 hours ahead of your scheduled departure. If you leave later than noon, you may be able to use a room to shower and change prior to leaving the resort. It does not hurt to ask at the front desk.
Return to FAQ List
I heard that you have to pay a departure tax when leaving Jamaica. How much is it and when do we pay?
Currently it is 1,000 Jamaican dollars or $28.00 US dollars. Check with your travel agent if you booked a package or with your airline if you booked directly. Many tour packages have already included it. Many of the airlines include it in the airline ticket price. I know that Expedia, Delta and Air Jamaica include the tax in their packages. If it is not included, you will need cash to pay the departure tax at Mobay airport prior to being able to go thru security.
Return to FAQ List
Where is the best place to buy coffee and rum to take home?
Buy your coffee when you go into town. You should not pay more than $13 to $14 dollars per pound. Make sure the coffee has the "Coffee Board Seal of Approval" identifying it as Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee. Keep your coffee receipt if you buy ground coffee because the bag is a hard brick- shaped package. Buy your rum at the airport as the prices are very competitive and most of the times better than what you get in town, plus they’ll pack it up for you in a carry-on box. On this trip the prices for Appleton rum were: Appleton Special $10 per liter, Appleton V/X $12 per liter, Appleton Reserve $12 per 3/4 liter, Appleton Extra $14 per 3/4 liter.
Return to FAQ List
Is there a workout room with free weights and machines?
In addition to a large open-air gym open 24 hours, there are classes in aerobics, squash, racquet ball and tennis clinics, group power walks, etc. The Sports complex is the place for these activities; there is a jogging track, squash and racquetball courts, an Olympic- style, 25 meter pool and 10 lit tennis courts! (5 hard and 5 clay).

What toiletries does CSA provide?
They provide shampoo/conditioner, bath gel, soap, aloe gel and moisturizer, all in small bottles. You can buy most items at the CSA store at a premium. Toiletries will be replenished as needed by Housekeeping when the turndown service is performed between 6 and 9 pm.

By all means, bring your own camera to record those special moments, but Couples does provide the service of professional photography during dinner, at the beach party, and at your special request. For weddings and vow renewals, the services of a professional videographer are also available.

General Notes:
The food at Swept Away is excellent, very fresh and healthy. You can have fruit smoothies blended at the Veggie Bar with the ingredients of your choosing. This is a vegetarian’s dream resort, since there are always plenty of non-meat and non-dairy options available on the menu. You will not go hungry!
Drink plenty of water throughout the day . With heat, high humidity, and drinking alcohol you can get dehydrated easily and before you realize it. You don’t want to spend a day of your vacation feeling lousy. If you do suffer an illness or injury, there is a nurse's office with regular office hours at no charge. If you need medical attention outside the regular office hours a doctor is on call 24 hours. There is an additional charge if the doctor is called or a prescription is required.
The electric current in Jamaica is 110Volts, 50 cycles. This is similar to the US except your electrical appliance will run a little slower. You probably will not notice any difference.
Other excursions are offered by local travel companies. They have an agent at CSA to provide info and pricing. Depending upon your interests, you may want to pay for an off site tour.
Your room category will be reserved, but individual room choices cannot be guaranteed. It never hurts to ask, and if the resort is not full the staff will try to grant your special request. DO have your travel agent confirm your reservation and DON’T forget to keep a copy of your confirmation handy.
Once you leave the Couples Arrival area at Mobay and on your way to the buses/vans, you may be asked several times by different people, if you want to buy drugs. If you are not interested just say "No Thank You" or just ignore them. If you are interested, be careful. Drug dealers can work both sides of the street. Just remember, DRUGS ARE ILLEGAL in Jamaica and you could face fines and/or prison time. At the very least, if caught you will be detained. Not a good way to start your vacation.
Be prepared to hear “no problem” a lot J and remember the phrase “Irie (eye-ree), mon” when someone asks how you’re doing, how your stay is going, etc. as it means “everything’s great”!
