We recommend avoiding Roots Bamboo like the plague! We were planning on going to Alfreds while at Swept Away last month but ended up going to Roots Bamboo because Yellowman was supposed to be doing a Reggae concert. There was a $10.00 per person cover charge and Yellowman never did play.
While at Roots bamboo we were harrassed by aggressive drug dealers, prostitutes, scammers, hustlers, and out right thieves. We came very close to ending up in an outright brawl. This place gives Jamaica a bad name.
Next trip we will try Alfreds.

Roots Bamboo is by far my favorite, personally I am never harrassed - guess I just don't attract them - even though I am blonde hair, blue eyes. Alfreds is fun as well. You will enjoy either!

They can't even be compared to Margaritaville. We have been to Roots Bamboo and Alfreds and had no problem at either place. I think our driver was one reason for our positive experience. Both times we were with a driver that we hired through a tour service with a great reputation. We always felt as if we were "hooked up", so to speak, because management and locals knew who we were with. We were always watched out for and taken care of. I think we could have very possibly ended up with the same type of problems as "JamaicaCarl" described in the above post if we had not had our escort.
Go, have fun and I recommend hiring a driver who will take you there, get you through the gate and wait for you until you're ready to go. It may cost a little more but is so worth it.

Aleebama, you are so correct. The right driver/escort can make a world of difference. This is a different county from where others live and there are the cultural undertones that need to be understood. A driver who just drops you off and picks you up later is just that...a driver. Someone who spends time with you, explains the "runnings", is there for tips and suggestions, can step back and let you have private time yet is there at the drop of a hat or the crook of a pinkie finger should you have a question is worth their weight in gold. It can mean the difference between a 'not great at all' time...an "ok" time....or a great time.
Once you know how to flex (move up and down and understand the 'system') here, you are more able to return alone on your own feeling confident, comfortable, and more receptive to exploration..the whole time with open eyes and a smile on your face.
Carl, I'm sorry you had the misfortune of the night outing you had...no one there to 'field' the experience for you. Negril is one big improv theatre and you are part of the cast, though no one remembered to give you a script The characters you encountered are part of the counterculture, yet can be entertaining in their own right once you know what to expect and how to deflect them. You will for sure encounter more of this type of individual at the tourist venues than at the local party spots...people at the local unpublicized places are there to listen to the music, eat some food, have some drinks, move a little, watch others a lot, enjoy the vibes with no hassles. On the other hand, these places for the most part, unless a big holiday splash, will feature sound selectors rather than live performers. Again, any driver worthy of being in the profession should have filled you in or taken time to chat with you to see what it was you were looking for and made suggestions for alternative spots...or stayed there with you. Don't be afraid to speak up the next time you come back and let the driver know what it is you want to see and experience.
Nosnow...Margaritaville is a 100% overpriced tourist designed/frequented spot. Some days it is deader than a doornail, on others you couldn't get a beach chair to sit on if you tried (days when they bus in cruise ship passengers or resort patrons from Ochi, MoBay and Lucea). If you're in to Margaritaville Tshirts and the like, stop in, pick up something from the shop, take some photos and then walk up the beach to somewhere more relaxed. Watch the bill...you'll have a 28% addition to the already high priced food and drink that is for gratuity and tax (not uncommon for tourist establishments). Check the bill when it comes for accuracy in general.
Roots and Alfred's do serve food by day...I would skip Roots over Alfred's anyday in the way of food options, but that is just personal opinion.

If you are staying at CSA you can walk down the beach to Normas a nice restaurant. Margaritaville is a real tousit TRAP,has no flavor of Negril and the most crowded.
Trust the statements on this board. We had a hard time just tryin to walk past the place on the beach without getting really harrassed.
