Calling home with Google Voice or Skype

Anyone used these to call home? It would be nice to put the phone away for the week but we have a 2 and 4 yr old to check on. We have an iPad we will be bringing and I'm trying to determine which one is best?

We used our laptop and Skype and video chatted with our daughter everyday while we were at CTI last November. Wifi connection was a little slow at times, but it worked well.
