Hello,
My future father in-law wants to join our group for our weddingmoon in November at CSA, but he requires oxygen for a good part of the day. We live in MN and our summers are quite humid, but I am worried about him in Jamaica for a week. Do you think the humidity is unbearable for someone who needs oxygen or will he be ok most of the time?
There is no comparison between Minnesota and Jamaica. I think I'd talk to his doctor rather than getting advice here.
The humidity seems to vary. One time we were there and it did not rain once, not even a sprinkle. The humidity was HIGH because of that. All the other times it was high but not unbearable for me and I really hate humidity. I don't use oxygen though so I am not familiar with that aspect of it. I can tell you that the time it didn't rain there was a very nice older lady who also had oxygen and she seemed to be ok. She was there for a large wedding and spent a lot of her time in the shade by the pool or swimming. I talked to them a few times and she seemed to be pretty comfortable and looking fabulous. There is almost always a good breeze on the beach and you can keep cool which helped me deal with the humidity that week.
I didn't think the humidity was unbearable. It was HOT but the humidity was ok, in my opinion.
LOL! Obviously, sorry! I was just trying to say that we have high humidity in the summers here and he doesn't seem to mind that. He moves to Arizona for the bitter dry winters though. Just didn't know if November is any less humid then let's say July or August.Quote:

I don't think the humidity is too bad either. We have been twice to CSA in May, and the humidity wasn't nearly as bad as it is here in Florida at that time, but I would also suggest he ask his doctor. :O)
I think it'll be fine as long as he stays out of the direct sun. I think the potential bigger problem is the heat combined with the humidity, which can become unbearable for sensitive people. But I actually didn't find it to be very humid, except right after it rains, as someone else mentioned.
R&R 11/11/11--I meant specifically the humidity. People are on oxygen for a variety of reasons and their tolerance to humidity can vary...for some it is actually a non-issue and for some it can be a huge problem. Obviously having him along on this trip would be important but medical care in Jamaica is not quite what it is here in the states so you want to be sure that you start the trip with the best of advice and that is obtained from his doctor not from a message board full of really well meaning vacationers from all walks of life who don't know squat about your future father-in-law. I hope he gets to go and I hope you all have a wonderful trip, I just hope you'll consult with his physician for some great advice on how to make that trip easy and care free for all of you.
We have only been once in the Summer and it was quite a bit more humid.
Not so bad in Nov-Feb
The temp doesn't seem to change a whole lot but there is a "rainy" season when they get more rain in general but that doesn't mean it will rain all the time during that season. Since it's warm and you are right next to a huge body of water there is just always a certain level of humidity but it does go up sometimes.Quote:

Haven't been to Jamaica in November but were there the first part of December once & the humidity was considerably less than any other time we've been there in Feb - March - April - May - September. Wet swimwear would actually dry overnight & normally it doesn't dry at all. I would say it's still somewhat humid, though, but not unbearable. Nothing like July & August in Missouri when the humidy is horrible.
We usually go in May and it is very humid especially when it rains.
We were there this last November for Thanksgiving week and it was not humid at all. In fact most of the repeaters were talking about how it wasn't as humid as usual.

Thank you for all your responses! His doctor has said it is ok to go, and even got him some sort of device to get oxygen on the plane. Just don't want him to be stuck in the room the whole time! I am sure everything will be just fine!
It depends on the time of the year. We were there end of May/beginning of June last year and the humidity was insane -- and I'm from Florida so we're definitely used to it.
I am sensitive to high humidity due to Asthma. I was worried about the humidity in Jamaica during November when we went but i just talked to my doctor and brought my extra puffers, i also emailed the nurses at CN about the issue and they got right back to me about their on-site services etc(they happened to have what i would need if it turned to be a problem). So we went mid-november and i didn't have one problem, i found it to be nice and hot but not humid, it didn't bother my breathing at all. Again, i'm not on oxygen so i don't know how high his sensitivity is.
just talk to doc, and email the resort or phone and talk to them.
