Has anyone tried the spray tanning booths or airbrush tanning. New report came out about tanning booths and how dangerous they are. I usually only use the tanning booths right before vacation not on a regular basis. I have heard some stories about the spray type tan not lasting long. Can anyone give me some advise? thanks

Most of the warnings apply to those who use them all the time. You are just fine getting that base tan a month or so before you go. The spray tans are nice to even things out, but they do only last a few days and it does not protect you from the sun. In other words you will burn easier with just a spray tan than you would with a normal tan.

That's not true - the warning came out and said ANY amount of tanning in tanning beds is unsafe. Tanning does NOT protect you from the sun - a deep, deep tan has, AT BEST, an SPF of 6.

well, I guess do what you like then. If any amount of time in a tanning bed is bad then you better not go outside either. You had better not even consider laying on the beach. Studies come out all the time saying good and bad about whatever. You just need to use your head and do what you think is right.

Indeed. In moderation, most things will not harm you. Personally, I will be hitting the tanning booth a month or so before hitting the beach. Though that is the only time we use them.

Keep in mind, spray tans do not protect you from the sun. It's basically like putting on a dark makeup - you'll still need SPF in Jamaica. In fact, no matter how tan you are prior to Jamaica, you'll still need SPF. The dangers of tanning beds have been out for years, so has the dangers of drinking, smoking, not wearing a seatbelt, eating too many eggs...or is it not enough eggs? I can't keep up

In London, tanning booths are big business and there are loads of highlited blonde hair and BIG BIG orange tans walking down oxford Street.

Personally, I use them for a month before I go to Jamaica and find that I never get burned and go really dark brown (I am fair skined and blonde). I just look after myself and always wear protection every single day of my life (even in UK winter).

I frequently visit my local tanning salon to receive a spray tan. I have a very fair complexion and know that no amount of sun (real or artificial) is going to make me look tan, therefore I choose to minimize my risk of cancer and go for the spray on. Yes, it does wear off within a week (or a couple days if in the water a lot like when you are in Jamaica). What I tend to do is exfoliate really well before my spray tan so that it will go on evenly and last a little longer. Then, I moisturize every night with a moisturizing sunless tanner, just to keep the color. Of course, I wear a minimum of 15 SPF during all day light hours in Jamaica.

PS: I have tried the spray booths several times and have never been successful in achieving even color. If you can get past the weirdness factor of having a person spray you, the results are well worth it!

After my scare with skin cancer. I steer clear of the tanning beds, based on doctor's orders. I used to go to them all the time. (never had a red bull or watched porn in them though LOL.)

We go in January and there is no trace of a tan left over from summer. So here is what I do. I take 30 SPF and 15 SPF. I use 30 the first few days and then 15 for the last few days.

I get air brushed and it's the best. I felt as though I was more protected from the sun with the tan on my skin. I am a very fair Irish girl and never burned once during my trip. Now, it's true that I was a little lighter when I left than when I arrived, but still looked tan the whole time. I only learned about airbrushing after I had a mystic tan nightmare one day before we left for our trip. I looked like a freak! I used the misting booth at Hollywood Tans and will never do that again. I awoke the morning before our trip looking like a spotted oompa loompa. Talk about a freakout!! The lady at the airbrushing salon was not only able to fix my splotchy-ness but also remove the orange staining from my hands and feet. (SUGAR will remove tan creme!) I will never go back to a tanning bed or go into one of the "instant tan" booths. (Should call it "Instant Orange". Cost me about $50 and I was very happy with the result. Already have my appt set up for before our next trip. 2 weeks 2 days left! I attached a pic from my time at CN in March, this was 5 days after I was airbrushed.

I never tanned before we went in December 2008. I did use a good SPF50 lotion the first few days we were there, and then spf 30 after that. I also take a long time to tan, and never seem to get really brown. Just use a good sunscreen, putting it on often (especially if you go into the pool) and you should be fine. We even went AN, and I did not have any problems on the areas that are usually never exposed.

I don't tan ahead of time anymore. I wear 30 on the first day, then gradually go to 15 then 8. I tan easily though, even with SPF. Hubby doesn't do anything but burn so we keep 30 on him the whole time. You just have to know your skin and realize the sun is hotter (i.e. closer) when you're in Jamaica. Here's a pic.

Okay people, I used to work at a tanning salon so let me tell you something about spray on tans.

Many people think that spray tans are harmless, but that's simply not the case. It has not been around enough for us to really know what the potential risks are, and enough research has not been done. I had to get certified training about the spray tan, and one of the things it stated was that certain chemicals in the spray tan solution have been known to cause cancer. If you think about it, you should have already known this, because the main ingredient is DHA which causes a chemical reaction with your skin to produce the tan color (just like the sun causes a chemical reaction to produce a tan). Anytime you are forcing a chemical reaction to occur, you have the possibility of it getting out of control and turning into cancer (because cancer occurs when cells start growing out of control).

So IMO, spray tan is NOT any safer than regular tanning. Not to mention that they also don't tell you that the spray tan solution also contains arsenic, mercury, and lead... you won't catch me putting that on my skin!

So if I had to choose, I would pick the sun because at least it is natural and I feel that our bodies are more equipped to deal with it - you just have to do it in moderation! I just don't think enough is known about spray tans and the long-term effects of using them.

spray tans are nothing but cosmetic. If you just want to l;ook tan the are fine but there is no protection from the sun. we usually tan befor we go as, while you can still burn, you have at least activated your melanocites as you have started to tan and this usually cuts down on getting sun burned. you will have to make up your own mind on wether it's safe to use tanning beds, but in my experience, many of the people working in, or running the tanning salons do not give good advice and information to new customers, they just don't ask enough questions.

I want to add to my previous post: I used SPF 45 the whole time I was in Jamaica. I think that having the color on my skin gave some added protection. I would never think that a spray tan would protect me from burning. Just realized I sounded crazy in my last post! I had no problem being in my skivvies in front of the airbrushing lady. I'm very shy and she made me feel comfortable.

Tryed the Mystic spray tan which is the spray booth type and HATED IT! Stunk, faded unevenly when it wore off and just didn't make that much of a difference. I still have one left from the package of two I bought at the tanning place and I won't even bother to go get it. It was just YUCKY I'd rather be pale as a goast.

Oh and also wanted to say that if you get a spray tan, don't go in the pool - the chlorine can make it come off unevenly, making you look spotted.

I've tried the Mystic tan in the past, and loved it. BUT you should be aware that it can be streaky & does not fade evenly.

I know quite a few people who get spray tanned at a salon near me & they swear by it. My salon is $20 per visit and while you shouldn't be streaky, you still would have to beware of chlorine & uneven fading.

I personally tan for 3 months before we go away. YES - lol - 3 months. The first month and a half I actually spend more time getting undressed, than I do in the booth because I tan for the shortest amount possible and work my way up.

Bottom line - it's personal preference. They all have pros and cons... I know that tanning is not very good for you, but neither is almost everything in life... so I go the moderation route & have been happy with it to this point. =)

Ha ha ha ha you are dead right! As I typed it, I thought......I bet the picture I put up is one of the FEW without my sunnies!!!! And it was! Anyway, I definitely keep my hat on! And try and stay out of direct sun unless I'm in the water.........and as I am in the water a lot, that's perhaps another porkie (fib, for the non-brits)
