10 Tips for Visiting any Couples Resorts


1. Your beach-flag is your best friend.

2. Whatever you do, do not FOLLOW anyone out into the
ocean – particularly when they raise their hand.

3. Stray cats roaming the resort property are a good thing–
they keep the lizard and rodent population down.

4. Marijuana is illegal in Jamaica.

5. Lifting the index finger and the middle finger in the
shape of a “V” is the local sign for “Peace”, it does
not mean “get me two more drinks”.

6. Pack light – you’ll need the room on the way home as you
stow away the Cuban cigars and the extra liquor from
your mini fridge.

7. Bathing suits can get snagged if you attempt to swim
over the infinity pool edge.

8. Jamaica is nothing like Las Vegas. What happens in
Jamaica doesn’t stay in Jamaica - it shows up in
embarrassing pictures for family and friends to view
later.

9. Mixology classes are great educational experiences.

10. Trust me – pack your own Heinz.

Bad tip. It's illegal for Americans to purchase or consume any goods grown, produced, or transported through Cuba, even if you do so while outside of the U.S. Under the Trading with the Enemy Act, you could be subject to prosecution for bringing Cuban cigars back into the U.S.

Not only that, it is just truly tacky to suggest you steal the liquor that Couples is giving you as a wonderful perk. It is something that doesn't appear to be offered by other resorts and a nice perk to those of us who partake, and something that could be taken away if abused. I hope you were joking on this because I would hate to think people really consider stealing something like that when Couples is so generous as to offer it. But even as a joke, it's not funny.

The mini fridge liquor bottles have no caps just pour spouts so you really can't just pack them up and bring them back. They do it that way for a reason....

*remember on your last day to take your towels to watersports and get your receipt to hand in upon checkout

*ladies bring hair conditioner, it is not provided and your hair will need it

*bring a pen with you on the plane to fill out your customs/immigration forms

*Bring a large beach bag, you'll use it every day

Take a note book, keep a daily journal at breakfast of the previous days events.

Don't drink so much that you are miserable the next day.

Keep track of your stuff, it's a bummer to lose things that matter.

Don't try to do too much. Relax and enjoy the little things.

Be respectful of the other guests and staff, don't be an ass.

Take a walk down the beach, enjoy Negril outside the resort.

Don't throw your drink into the wind on the cat cruise. (Long story)

Don't eat the bowl that your pumpkin soup is served in at Feathers. (Another long story)

Make new friends!

As for the Cubans, if found they will just take them away...however we brought home a bunch last time we were at CSA and nothing happened sailed right through customs.

Typically, if you are found in possession of contraband Cuban cigars, U.S. Customs will merely confiscate them, but it's irresponsible to suggest to others that this is the extent of the penalty that they could face. If you're not a lawyer, you should refrain from providing legal advice, which includes advising on the extent of punishment that one could face for violating federal law. Violation of the Trading with the Enemy Act could result in criminal prosecution with a penalty of a fine of up to $100,000, imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both. 50 U.S.C.S. Appx § 16.

While I haven't heard of anyone being prosecuted recently for smuggling in a few cigars, customs agents do have discretionary authority to place you under arrest; even if not prosecuted, being placed under arrest isn't how I'd choose to end a vacation. There was a couple on the message board recently that was detained in customs b/c they chose to bring in Cuban cigars, and they were threatened with prosecution. While they were eventually allowed to leave, their detention frightened them enough that they'll never attempt to smuggle contraband into the country again.

Several people have stated this and I was hoping there would be an official response from the OP, but since there hasn't I'll take a stab at it. She may have been referring to when....you know how on those huge tours complete with a tour guide, the guide will lead the group, often either with a raised hand or a flag to make sure everyone is following? I'm guessing that was the intention of her line.

As for the Cubans, if found they will just take them away...however we brought home a bunch last time we were at CSA and nothing happened sailed right through customs.

Altho I have every intention of lighting up a good ol' phatty Cubano during our stay, I probably won't take any chances of trying to smuggle any thru customs. If I'm that hellbent on bringing back some stogies, which I probably won't be, I'll just buy some Dominican brands, which I understand are often just as fine in quality and craftsmanship as their Cuban counterparts, they just lack the street cred and political romance of the latter.

LOL that is too funny, to each their own.

Yes Demeter Marijuana although thought otherwise is Illegal in Jamaica...due mostly to the sanctions from the US. Back in 2001, a government commission recommended that marijuana be legalized for personal use by adults in Jamaica -- A move, it was anticipated that the government would have endorsed despite opposition from the United States, which has spent millions to help eradicate the crop on the island. But today, we are still in limbo on that.

But with the new legalization steps in the US who knows that could all change one day...

Although Jamaica's parliament has considered the legalization of marijuana, it remains illegal, and offenders are subject to a fine, incarceration, or both. If you're planning to stay at one of the Negril resorts, it's not uncommon to see the police patrolling in the water or on the beach. When the police appear, the guys on jetskis are suddenly absent.

Could it possibly refer to someone venturing out to the water to hmmmmmmm....relieve themselves??

I hope not -- at least at Couples, as there are always plenty of nice, clean facilities in close proximity! I have not seen the raised hand part of this used by anybody but Im guessing they would also hold up one or two fingers??
