Riding in town might be safe. Riding elsewhere might not be. I ride all over Iowa and I wouldnít ride in Jamaica. CSA use to have bike tours into Negril but gave that up a few years ago.

i would strongly suggest NOT renting a bike in negril. Traffic, speed of traffic flow and the use of the "shoulder" (aka in the states the bike lane ) as a passing lane makes it faily adventurous to say the least.
I know people who have done it and lived to tell about it in the end it depends on your need for a rush while on holiday Me i will stick to walking or cabbign to the cliff westend and not having to worry as much have fun

I personally would not ride a bicycle in Jamaica ....... the traffic on the road where CN is located is WILD to say the least ....... I wouldn't even want to walk along the road very far & I've been skydiving & that didn't scare me - LOL ....... You'll have to decide for yourself once you've checked it out.

Beep! Beep! You canít ride in Jamaica without a horn on your bike. This is how the drivers communicate. You have to go to Jamaica first to know what Iím talking about.

We rented scooters a few years ago in CN but you need to be careful and not just becasue of the traffic. We had a guy who was "escorting" us around Negril to see specific things. While we were leaving the center of town another guy showed up and tried to convice us he was with the group and he really was not. He was actually trying to get us to follow him so that he could rob us. I am not sure but I think if you rent the scooters you need to have someone from the place to be with you at all times. We eventually convinced our guide to let us go after a few hours and he did but I would suggest if it is your first time to make sure someone is with you.

I'm not sure I'd recommend renting bikes, especially if its your first time in Negril. You'd probbly be ok along the beach road, would just have to watch out for passing taxis and potholes but I absolutely would not try to ride a bike to the cliffs. The roads really narrow with a lot of blind spots and no real shoulder, add to that the way the taxis drive...
We did rent a scooter once when we stayed on the cliffs, but we mainly rode the back roads past the cliffs into the country side. It was a great experience and my husband bugs me every trip to do it again. The only scary part was that we did end up in the town center and had to get back up the cliff road, and having stopped to pick up some curried conch to take back for lunch and having to hold it on my lap while I held onto my husband(with my eyes closed) made for not the most relaxing end to our scooter trip. Oh.. and you definitely don't need a guide.
