Couples Resorts Guest Spotlight Series

The Welches

Hi Couples family, This "Guest Spotlight Series" has been so much fun, and this week I am excited to share with you all Steve and Amy Welch's story about their lives, their love, and their Couples Resorts recurring love story. Amy is not only a longtime guest of Couples, but she is also the brains and heart behind the Couples Swept Away fan group on Facebook. We love the Welches, and here's why...

Carrie: How did you two meet?
Welches: We met when we were in the 3rd grade! Long, long story short – while we were close friends all through high school, we didn’t start dating until I (Amy) was in graduate school. That’s an entirely separate blog post!

Carrie: How many times have you been to Couples Resorts, and to which properties?
Welches: We have been fortunate enough to have stayed at Couples 14 times (and counting!). We have been to all 4 of the properties. Our ‘newbie’ stay was for our honeymoon in 2002 at CTI (when it was still called COR). We’ve celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, a vow renewal and a babymoon.

Carrie: How has Couples played a role in your personal love story?
Welches: Couples has been a part of our love story from almost the beginning of our marriage. We celebrated our honeymoon with Couples. When Steve and I were living apart (he in Texas and I in Tennessee), Couples was where we met to reconnect. We celebrated 10 years of marriage and renewed our vows at Couples. We even celebrated expanding our family and spent our babymoon at Couples. We had every CSA staff member helping us come up with baby names! Once our daughter was born, it was very important to Steve that we not skip our annual Couples trip. It’s such an important recharge to us as a couple that he knew if we skipped the first one after she was born, it would be easy for us to skip the following year and the next and the next….. So we flew the grandparents to Houston and when Adelaide was just 9 months old, we went on trip #14, back to CSA! It was the best thing we could have done for ourselves as new parents. We even booked #15 to CTI before we got back!

Carrie: What are the top three pieces of advice you would give to a first-time guest at Couples?
Welches: This is hard to narrow down because there is so much advice! 1: Don’t overpack. Once you think you have enough clothes, take away two outfits and add a bathing suit. Once you think you have enough sunscreen, add a bottle. 2: Get to know the staff and other guests once you’re on property. It really enhances the Couples experience. 3: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Once you arrive, it really doesn’t matter what type of balcony view you have or whether or not they serve Diet Mountain Dew… will have an amazing time at Couples. Just relax and take it all in.

Carrie: In your opinion, what makes Couples so unique?
Welches: Couples is unique for some obvious reasons – the value; the inclusions can’t be beat; their food is top-notch; their boutique-style of resorts; the customer service… But what makes them truly unique and keeps us coming back is their staff – I’ll give you two examples out of many: 1. On our 3rd trip to Couples, (only our second to CTI) we met friends from the previous year who were celebrating his 40th birthday during their stay. It just so happened that on his birthday, we were all hanging out at the main bar talking about his birthday dinner, which they had planned to have at Bayside (back when it was still Italian) and how much he would love to have mussels. Well, apparently, the food and beverage manager overheard our conversation and relayed it to the chef at Bayside, who went out on his own and purchased mussels for our friend to have on his birthday. What a wonderful surprise! 2. On our 4th trip to Couples in 2006 we were at CTI (we had been to CTI the previous year, but CN the year before that) and at breakfast on our very first morning, Steve was in line at the omelet station while I was drinking my coffee back at our table. Before Steve could even place our order, Davis (the omelet chef at the time) knew exactly what I (Amy) wanted just by seeing Steve in line! He knew I always ordered three fried egg whites – but it had been over a year since he’d seen me! Amazing!

Carrie: In a single word, describe what Couples means to the two of you.

Carrie: Which staff members or fellow guests do you most look forward to seeing when you return?
Welches: Over the years, we have made so many friends with the staff, particularly the dive crews, that it’s really not fair to single any of them out and many are no longer with Couples. But what we look forward to every year is spending a week at Couples with our very best friends – Sarah and Lee – who we sometimes only get to see once a year, on this trip. Couples is not only about connecting as a couple, but it’s also about connecting with friends. We’ve met several guests over the years who we have become great friends, some so much so that we all try to schedule our trips during the same week. We also look forward to turning many of our friends from back home into repeaters.

Carrie: Fill in the blank: Our ideal day at Couples consists of_____________
Welches: Diving, drinking, laughing, sunning, floating, drinking, eating, loving, living! Thank you, Steve and Amy for sharing your story, and we look forward (as always) to welcoming you "home" soon and to continue to be a part of your story and Mr and Mrs. One love, Carrie
