Guest Spotlight Series: Santa Claus is coming to {Couples}

Hi Couples family,

In the spirit of the season, I have selected to highlight Gary and Judy Massey aka Couples Resort's unofficial Mr. & Mrs. Claus from Grovespring, Missouri. They are jolly, sincere and have hearts for others that is truly an inspiration not only this time of year, but year-round. The Masseys call Couples Sans Souci home and I hope you enjoy their account of what they love most in the interview below. Enjoy!

Carrie: How many times have you been to Couples Resorts, and which properties?
The Masseys: We have been five times to Couples. Each time has been to Couples Sans Souci.

Carrie: How has Couples played a role in your personal love story?
The Masseys: Sans Souci has played a large role in our lives. After 25 years of hard but rewarding farm life and each of us additionally working in town 5 and 6 days a week, we raised two wonderful children, Elizabeth and James. We inherited the family farm when dad died. We eventually built and paid off our new log home. Our kids went to college and both have great jobs. Both married wonderful people, and we have been rewarded with two grand-angels so far. We were, and have been blessed. In 2011, with the kids gone and an empty nest, we decided to celebrate us being together 25 years. Judy had never been on a plane. I had previously been to Jamaica in 1982, and always in the back of my mind wanted to return. I researched and Couples Resorts won out. With Sans Souci at the top of the other resorts, with the flora, flowers, and trees. The rooms on the cliffs, the surprise little hideaways for two. All inclusive, adult couples only, and the opportunity to use a Au Natural beach if one chose to. We liked what we felt was a combination of a European villa and Southern plantation mixed in with Caribbean tradition and hospitality. Our first year was like we were put under a spell. We have always had a love story, but now being 50 years old, we felt like we were on the honeymoon we never had. The sunset beach experience added fuel to the flame. Our fire over the years never went out but Sans Souci stirred the ashes and a new flame was rekindled and to be honest it became a fever pitch and the flame still burns bright. Each year we go back to fan the flames. Our fire now is an eternal flame, with the grace of God and Sans Souci. We tried a resort in Honduras a couple years ago that resembles Sans Souci and each day, even though we enjoyed it, we commented, "this is not as good as Sans Souci". We learned quick the old saying, "if it ain't broke don't try to fix it". We, as many say, this is like coming home or paradise.

Carrie: What are the top three pieces of advice you would give to a first-time guest at Couples?
The Masseys: The three pieces of advice I would pass on to newcomers: 1. Come with a open mind. You are going to experience so many different things. A different culture, couples of all ages and backgrounds. Relax and take it all in. 2. Take a tour with staff or take your own tour of the grounds. Explore every nook and cranny. Judy and I have a tradition now. When we use the steps, we find a spot half way up the steps, we stop, embrace, kiss, and say we love each other. It sometimes leads to a dozen kisses to wherever we're going. Try it... you WILL like it. Try your on tradition, with reason. Remember love is in the air. You both are there to spark each others passion. We all have that burning itch. Find each others and scratch it. We now just come to relax, eat well, drink some, and enjoy the other guest and staff. We are not into excursions . 3. This resort has an Au Natural opportunity. Many will say do it the first day if you are new to the experience. I agree. To some it won't be your cup of tea. If not no problem, all is good. Many that wait to muster up the nerve after a few days wish they had done it earlier. Then they went back home and in the workplace dream of when and how they can get back to their next home or paradise.

Carrie: In your opinion, what makes Couples so unique?
The Masseys: What makes Sans Souci so unique for us is a combination of things: Staff, the other guests that now I refer to as my brothers and sisters, the food, scenery, and ambiance. And last but not least, Sunset Beach.

Carrie: In a single word, describe what Couples means to the two of you.
The Masseys: The single word I would use to describe Sans Souci would be, FRIENDSunitedTOGETHERinPEACEandHARMONYinOURlittlePIECEofEDEN. Okay I know it is a long word, but it is how I feel.

Carrie: Which staff members or fellow guests do you most look forward to seeing when you return?
The Masseys: The staff that are dear to us are all bartenders. A bartender is your source of information. They are our brothers and sisters also. I would like to see these people rewarded big time because of their services and friendship to us. They are, Tanisha, Veronique, Quessiann (MissQ), and believe it or not, Easton. I can't wait to embrace these people again.

Carrie: Fill in the blank: Our ideal day at Couples consists of _______________.
The Masseys: Our ideal day at Sans Souci consists of many things. I can't say just one. That would be an injustice to several people or things. On our first trip because of my white beard, at the arrival couples lounge I heard the words, SANTA HAS COME TO JAMAICA. A few staff at the resort said the same. Each trip it has been like a snow ball rolling down hill. Getting more and more over my head sometimes I feel. I do not hold a candle to the real Santa. It is overwhelming at times but I also welcome it. On our second trip because I was being referred to as Santa I felt the need to bring candy for the guest and staff. ( 20 lbs. ) and a suitcase of school supplies for the Jamaican school children. I did a different thing this year. I decide to donate money to Dianne Pollard, who helps spearhead through the Issa Trust Fund what these children need. Such as back packs. What are all the crayons, pencils, erasers, without a backpack to carry it in. I have a 50 year old carrying case from my youth. This will be something they will have and cherish forever. Keep the supplies coming folks. I just wanted to try something different this year. I was afraid of overload of too many of one thing to each school. I decided Diane was my decider for me. What you give will be a true blessing. I also was diagnosed with the early stages of Leukemia this year. Was told there was no cure. With the Lord's help and your prayers, I feel better. I am blessed. All I want to do is pay back when I am able. I am thankful for the support of the Sans Souci staff and the Couples Sans Souci Fans Group. You all have made my journey easier. At the difficult crossroads, you and God lead me through the crowded intersections . Many times when on the low road, you brought me up to the high road. I and Judy, wish you a very blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May we all get together soon. I cannot fill Santa's shoes to you all but I will try my best and always will be there for you in spirit. So on a cold starry Christmas Eve, look into the sky and listen to these words. A HO HO HO AND AWAY WE GO. RUDOLPH WATCH OUT FOR THAT AIRPLANE, I KNEW WE SHOULD HAVE INSTALLED THAT NEW GPS SYSTEM ON YOU INSTEAD OF POLISHING THAT SHINY NOSE. HO HO HO.

Merry Christmas, from the Couples family to each of yours. We are thankful for you and your friendships today and every day.

One love,
