A Legendary Backdrop toCinematic History

In the film, James Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of fellow agent Strangways and the mysterious activities of the criminal mastermind, Dr. No. One of the characters Bond encounters is Miss Taro, one of Dr. No's agents. On the last day of filming, two scenes were shot: one showing Bond walking to Miss Taro’s house in the late afternoon, and another in which Zena Marshall’s Miss Taro is picked up outside her flat by Inspector Duff. Miss Taro’s house was one of the original villas at Sans Souci.
A minor continuity anomaly exists in the film, as the address given is both fictitious and contradictory. “Magenta Drive” does not exist in Jamaica, and while Bond is initially told the house number is 239, Miss Taro later refers to it as 2171 when confirming the address for a taxi.
Today, that villa no longer exists within the Couples Sans Souci resort, as renovations over the years have made way for expansions and improvements.

In the movie, Jamaica stands in for the fictional Caribbean island of San Monique, home to the villain Mr. Big and his voodoo cult. Alongside CIA agent Felix Leiter and local fisherman Quarrel Jr., Bond investigates Mr. Big’s heroin empire.
The Sans Souci resort served as the hotel for James Bond and his undercover ‘wife,’ CIA agent Rosie Carver. The film features the exterior and lobby of the hotel as Roger Moore’s Bond strolls suavely to the front desk. In a breakfast scene the following morning, Bond becomes suspicious of Rosie’s intentions and later visits a gift shop to buy tarot cards. The exterior shots of the gift shop were also filmed at Sans Souci.
Roger Moore thoroughly enjoyed his time at Sans Souci. In his memoir The Live and Let Die Diaries, he fondly recalls a dinner he and his wife shared with one of the resort’s previous owners, Ian Pringle. He marvels at the incredible effort it took to carve the hotel into the cliffside and to transplant mature tropical vegetation into the 10-acre plot—creating what he called “a tropical truth of beauty” and a genuine Jamaican paradise.
